The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
