The Ashes series Player Performance Scores: Which England Players Received a 1/10 Rating?

'Top class' Travis Head Hundred Has Australia Sailing Towards Victory Over the English

England Individual Evaluations

Zak Crawley – 1

Tipped for Australian pitches however managed just a rare Ashes pair from an England opener in just 11 balls.

Ben Duckett – Five

Made beginnings during each knock. His dismissal during the match marked the point when it began to fall apart for the English side.

Ollie Pope – Six

Seems improved due to technical tweaks. Opening match in the series is usually his best, then it goes downhill. England require him to build on this.

Root – 1

Miles away from his maiden century on Australian soil. England require the nous of their best player to have any chance to bounce back from this.

Harry Brook – 5

His fifty during the initial knock was skittish, but valuable. Poor shot in the follow-on.

Ben Stokes – 6

Returned after being injured to take a five-for, though appeared out of touch when batting. Lost control while fielding in the face of Head's assault.

Jamie Smith – Four

Could have the game for Australia, but needs to smarten up. Can expect a lot of short bowling from now on.

Atkinson – 5

Part of the impressive English first-innings bowling performance and tried to contribute while batting later on. Part of the bowlers that fell apart on Saturday evening.

Brydon Carse – Five

Comparable to above, plus the mustard of being taken apart by Head.

Archer – Five

Appeared awesome while bowling initially and proved the top among struggling teammates in the second. Might yet have an impact on the series.

Mark Wood – 5

Finished wicketless, yet extremely commendable to just get on the field given his time away.

Australian Team Player Ratings

Jake Weatherald – Six

First-timer had tough luck to face to Jofra Archer in the first innings, later played his part in the sensational pursuit of runs.

Khawaja – Three

A bizarre Test. Did not look fit and spent time off the field. Took several key catches in the slips, yet also seemed slow in the cordon. Earns a point for the injury that allowed Head to bat as opener.

Marnus Labuschagne – Seven

A successful return to the team. Absorbed England's bowling pressure better than others initially, and backed up Head in the second.

Smith – 5

Looked off form early on. Needless before the game attack about Panesar.

Travis Head – Nine

Perhaps unfair to not get the full 10, but he played a pretty ropey shot in the first innings. His second-innings century was an historic innings.

Green – 5

Claimed the crucial dismissal of Pope in the first innings. Shaken by a Mark Wood bouncer during his innings. Barely required later in the match.

Carey – 5

Tried a counter-attack versus the English attack early in the match. Neat with the gloves.

Starc – Nine

Shouldered the weight of the attack without Cummins and Josh Hazlewood with the first Australian Ashes series 10-for for two decades.

Scott Boland – Six

Below top form in the first innings. Got better in the second to spark the England batting collapse.

Doggett – 6

Solid first appearance. Quite able stand-in for Cummins and Hazlewood.

Nathan Lyon – 2

Almost a spectator during a game controlled by pace. Possibly suffered an injury when struck by Mark Wood.
