Our team is checking images and video shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
