Israelis mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Israelis have come together across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions said that an evening round of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.
The source explained the morning session concluded without significant progress, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are striving to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Talks
- An enduring truce
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
- After-conflict management of the area
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages are released no one will be secure."
"When we see everybody home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.
In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Protester one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the captives to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about the majority of the population prefer the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side district, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the dusk arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area said another two dead people had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the southern area, medical staff reported.
